Al Qaeda has been urging that battle for years. What does this add? Are they going to start attacking Mongolia?

Of course, the next headline is the fantasy headline. That Economic Growth just got stuck in traffic, but it's coming. No really, it is. Just skipping that Sports Illustrated headline (what did Landis do? Forget to take his steroids one day?) I like how the headlines balance themselves out. 100 kids rescued from drowning to make up for the 100 dead people in the heatwave (speaking of which...the worst is over right? I mean August is traditionally the nicest month of the year. Especially in New York, right?)

The next two headlines give us the "even CNN is bored with the Iraqi war" double whammy, by invoking crazy Cindy Sheehan and evil Pentagon. Like the Castro/Walmart doubling of a few days ago, this is to just let us know that everyone is fucked. Thank you CNN.

And just for fun, Afghanistan makes a headline. Some Americans died there. Ahhhhhhh.

The last five headlines are really there to push the Happy News. Very very rich woman that was forced to live like a real person by son comes under scrutiny. Geez, if the son made her get a job and work for a living he'd be in jail. And there's the dead chess champion. Most of the time that's a non-story, but it's a dead TEENAGER and a RUSSIAN one at that. And those whacky Russians are just so entertaining when they die.

And just so you don't think that CNN is lewd with it's Public Breast stories (although I didn't look at the Harry Potter story yet. I vaguely suspect that the guy playing Dumbledore is the one getting naked), they have a burning dog story - with pictures. I was worried about how the media didn't cover enough stories about dogs in pain. So thank you CNN. I have my dog in pain story for the day.

Power steering

Although Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and the leader of the majority bloc in parliament, Saad Hariri, were the ones who attended this week's international Rome Conference on Lebanon, at the moment the real political power in the country seems to be in the hands of Nabih Beri.

"But there was always something new. The Hezbollah members confiscated a storeroom and a cellar in his neighbor's house and put crates of bombs or explosives there. They installed antennas on other houses. Nobody resisted, because it was clear that such a person would not find work or would not receive a reduction on school tuition and medical treatment.

"It's true that not everyone was like that. Some became active and enthusiastic members of the organization. I don't understand them. They volunteered to store explosives in their homes, where they lived with their many children. Weren't they afraid for the children?

"Now my nephew's house is gone. He didn't have bombs, but somebody apparently informed on him to your Military Intelligence. The settling of accounts among the villagers has not yet ended - the envy exists, and this is a good time for revenge.

"And do you know what's happening now? My nephew told me that he hopes Hezbollah will continue to control south Lebanon - not because he likes them, but because they're the only ones who can build his house or compensate him. He doesn't expect anything from the Lebanese government."

America's Next Top Fear Factor

Sorry, I'm addicted. It will pass. But the whole shark tank shoot and why they had to get rid of the shark - just gives that whole combination of beauty and queasiness that makes the show so damn addictive.

It's been awhile since I used that mood thing. Nothing else. It's just like everyone is either cranky or making me cranky.

I think it's about the three weeks, but it could be more than that.

Either way, it's really putting me in the mood to sit on a floor whilst fasting. But that's not until Thursday. I suppose I could clean first.

Moral muddle

By Meron Rapoport
In the end I didn't show him the pictures, although they were what had brought me to the room of the commander of the Israel Air Force base in Hatzor. A few days earlier I had received them by e-mail from an unknown sender. A series of about 20 stomach-churning pictures: an 8-year-old girl who was completely burned; the body of a child, of indeterminate age and sex, cut in two; a series of bodies of distorted-looking children in the back compartment of an improvised refrigerated truck. All victims of IAF attacks in Lebanon. The pictures were accompanied by claims of Lebanese doctors that the killing was a result of unfamiliar, strange Israeli weapons.

Dr. Chen Kugel, the pathologist to whom I showed the pictures, says that there is nothing strange about these injuries. They are typical of someone who was near the center of a very strong explosion. Very similar to the injuries suffered by the many Israeli citizens whom Kugel treated after suicide attacks in buses.

In the end, the meeting with the people who drop these bombs on Lebanon took place on Wednesday evening, after the sad results of the battle in Bint Jbail had already been made public. The base in Hatzor looked very peaceful, a little bit like an old-time kibbutz before it became privatized, and very proud. On the wall hang the photos of the former commanders of the base, from Amos Lapidot to Dan Halutz. "Anyone who wants to be an IAF commander gets there from here," they said in the office. Most of the time it was quiet, but toward sunset deafening sounds of landings and take-offs were heard, on the way to Lebanon or Gaza. The fact that nobody is talking about Gaza - as the base commander explained to us - does not mean that they are not operating there. On that same Wednesday, 23 Palestinians were killed in the Gaza Strip, among them six civilians. The IAF bombed there, too.
