Books Readin 2015 # 10 - Terry Pratchett
Mar. 7th, 2015 10:47 pm10. Going Postal by Terry Pratchett - I had forgotten how much I enjoyed Terry Pratchett books. I remembered enjoying them, but it was more of an intellectual fact than an emotional one. I have read so many Carpet People books and Rincewind books that I stopped looking forward to reading Terry Pratchett.
From the first moment, I stared reading this book I was back in love with the works of Pratchett. Moist Von Lipwig is one of those perfect rogue characters that we've seen before - the con man with the charm to pull it off - being forced to get a real job in a way that is perfect skill set. The Arch Chancellor again acts like the tyrant/fairy godmother to the city. Hell, Charles Dance plays him in the movie. There's also a golem named Pump who is one hand to be Moist's guard and savior.
There is the villain in the form of the telegraph company complete with a banshee killer. But the most fun is Moist using his talents to get a post office working after comically bad disrepair and - oddly enough - working his way through his redemption.
I want to say more about this book, but it's harder to talk about books that you like. The humor comes from the people and not cheap gags and there is a great deal of anger and darkness that you won't necessarily catch if you are just looking for a fun book but there is a great deal of anger at a world that needs the kind of manipulators like Moist and Archchancellor.
