39. Weathering With You book 3 by Makato Shinkai & Wataro Kubota - I'm currently watching an anime on Netflix called "A Whisker Away" where a girl turns into a cat to get close to her crush. It's a little too stalker-friendly for my tastes. Also I'm just hoping it explores the nature of how we will accept a whole lot more from cats then we do from humans. Either way I doubt I'll be won over like in this book.
So we're at the end of Weathering With You. And it follows the Shinkai formula of 1. Magic 2. Tragedy 3. Just Kidding Everything Actually Works Out (watch Your Name or Shizune for the same thing). So the first chapter was a runaway finding a girl who could literally change the weather. The second chapter was the runaway and the girl trying to hide from the cops as the girl disappears and she is revealed to be a sacrifice who will make the weather clear up.
This chapter is Hodaka doing all he can to get to her and convince her to leave that position. And I wouldn't say that I cried when he goes "I want you more than blue skies" but it got to me. And it's not just that he wants her but he wants her to do something for herself and not spend all of her life sacrificing herself to weather patterns.
This is actually the one Shinkai where the undoing of the tragedy actually messes things up more. In Your Name, that comet was going to hit regardless and in Shizune they find a different way to stop the earthquakes (actually the cat that they are following around changes his mind about wanting to be free because true love). So this one might be my favorite because it's basically going "so what if Tokyo is under water, we are not going to sacrifice people"
I also think that The Last of Us has a happy ending. Oh sure, they might save the human race by killing her but fuck that.
