17.The Hero Discovered: Mage vol 1 by Matt Wagner - It's weird when the author includes an author picture and the hero looks like him (but with more hair). Which makes me think that Matt Wagner has rage issues and might have killed a dog when he was 7. I hope not, but that's a seriously weird anecdote in an otherwise better than average superhero origin story that involves Faery. Our hero - the very confused Kevin - gets done killing an ogre and tells a story about how he was a little kid and he tried to train a puppy and ended up beating the puppy to death out of frustration.
I think that the point of the story is don't give children puppies? Seriously? Fucking hell.
I mean I'd love to talk about the rest of this story and how his cranky superhero seems pretty much in line with what was coming out in the 80s and 90s. Even compare it to his infinitely more compelling Grendel series. But I really can't get around that fucking dog story.
I mean it was a good read. But a wise man once said "once you stick a scene of a puppy being beaten to death by your hero, you're pretty much fucked."
