8. The Dollhouse Family by M.R. Carey & Peter Gross - I thought that Mike Carey just wrote under the name Mike Carey but now I see that it's M.R. Carey and that M.R. Carey is the standard pen name. Looks like the pen name is a recent thing. I looked up to see if he's trans but I only see that he's putting a trans character in a story or novel. So that's good. I did my due diligence and if I'm misgendering and dead naming M.R. Carey I'm doing it without malice and to the best of my knowledge at the moment. (I remember being transphobic and while it was easier not having to have this conversation, being a transphobic asshole is not a good way to be).
ANYHOW, this comic takes a few issues to tell you what it's going for. The beginning is that there is a doll house and the girl can get into the doll house and meet with all these people who are living in the doll house. They are all toys come to life. There's also a black room that wants to keep her in the doll house. Oddly enough when the ending reveals everything, it's also a letdown.
But in between when she is trying to stay away from the doll house and then keep her daughter from getting involved in the doll house, that's where most of the tension comes. I was only going to read to issue 3 last night and then go to sleep, but after issue 3 I couldn't put it down.
I guess it's appropriate that is Vertigo but under the Joe Hill imprint since "gotta keep reading gotta keep reading...wait...that's the reason?" is pretty much a staple of Joe's father. And sometimes Joe. But that doesn't mean that it's going to be part of Carey's writing. (although I think I was simllarly disappointed in the last few collections of Lucifer).
The doll house is a demon that wants its power back and all the characters who get trapped in the doll house are descendents. And there's a magic cat that is hanging around to fight the demon/doll house. That's the ending. But everything up to it (except the slow first issue) is amazing.
