5. Komi Can't Communicate vol 17 by Romohito Oda - Today I responded to a comment with "I see what you're saying but I mostly disagree because..." Like what the fuck happened to me? I've become nice. If you read into the archives of this blog you might suspect that it's the blog of a guy becoming an incel (or already there), but yeah I guess I have grown up. I've changed. I've stopped calling people fucking idiots only to fee bad about it later. Oh I still call people fucking idiots, but it's usually truly noxious types like Tom Monteleone and his crowd. I am also less likely to gravitate to the nasty stories about nasty people. Oh granted, I just finished a James Ellroy book and I can see myself enjoying Hubert Selby jr. but I think I enjoy books about people that genuinely care about each other more.
I might not make this preamble for every "Komi Can't Communicate" book I read this year, but just know that I love it. In this comic, Komi tells her rival for Tadano's affection that she should not give up. Sure Komi has feelings for Tadano, but that doesn't mean that Manbagi should just step aside if Manbagi cares about him. It's probably not going to work. But it's sweet to think that everyone at least wants everyone else to be happy even if that's confusing and aggravating in the long run. The book ends with Tadano wondering if he was dating Komi or Manbagi. The "I've walked a long time with this woman. Was that a date?"
Oddly enough the friend who recommended this comic to me was the friend that I used to take long walks with and even after she moved away we used to talk every day. Forever, I kind of felt like we could have been dating, but mostly we just gravitated to each other. Then I caught feelings for her and realized that a lot of our mutual respect was based on some shitty childhood things and that while I realized after 4 years of friendship taht I was actually in love with my friend, she wasn't in love with me. We aren't talking at the moment. I hope we will again, but I still feel needy when I think about her. It's really up to her, but when we are friends again, I need to not be all emotionally dependent on her.
But I love this book. And not just because he reminds me of a friend that I miss terribly.

6. How to Cheat a Dragon's Curse by Cressida Cowell (aka how to train your dragon, bk 5). This book is funny. And it's confusing because these are not well trained dragons. And they talk. They talk a lot. Hiccup needs to travel to another viking island to get the vegetable-that-should-not-be-named which turns out to be a potato. Also potatoes are very rare in this book (since they aren't indigenous to Europe) and there are dragons who have a disease that can only be cured by potatoes. I might have to get more books in this series if only for the need for light reading between the heavy books I keep reading.
